USA Loses To Czech Republic, Finish Seventh In World Cup

Sep 25, 2016 1:54 AM

Left with nothing play for at the World Cup of Hockey, USA coach John Tortorella told his players to play a game for themselves.

They played hard, gave effort in a meaningless round-robin finale but still lost 4-3 to the Czech Republic on Thursday night. With an 0-3-0 record and a minus-6 goal differential, the U.S. finished seventh among eight teams, ahead of only Finland.

"The bottom line is we leave here with nothing," Tortorella said. "Certainly we can't be happy about that."

USA Loses To Team Europe In World Cup Opener

Sep 19, 2016 2:34 PM

When the United States filled out its roster for the World Cup of Hockey, it looked heavy on grit and physicality and light on skill and scoring.

That became reality in the Americans' stunning 3-0 loss to unheralded Team Europe on Saturday in the World Cup opener. With offensive defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and 30-goal scorer Kyle Palmieri scratched, the U.S. struggled to generate quality scoring chances and finds itself in trouble one game into the tournament.
